This past Sunday we were all saddened to hear the news
that our beloved Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Frank Pollard, went home to be with
the Lord. While hymns were being played on a keyboard next to his bed,
Dr. Pollard slipped into eternity and into the presence of the God he has
faithfully served for many years.
We will not fully know Dr. Pollard’s influence
for the gospel until we join him in heaven. However, we do know
that he touched the lives of
people literally all over the world. On a weekly basis, he preached
to his flocks in various churches in Texas and in Jackson, MS.
He preached from the pulpit of First Baptist Church Jackson for 22 years
and
his sermons
were broadcast across the state of Mississippi, around the nation
on the Family Net network, and to millions of others in Russia.
In addition to preaching from his church pulpit
each week, he also proclaimed the Word of God through other avenues.
From 1978-2001 he was the “Baptist
Hour” radio preacher and from 1991-2001 he was the “Baptist
Hour” television preacher. Also, he was the host of “At Home
with the Bible,” a teaching and preaching television ministry, from
1978-1984. His influence for the gospel through these media was far-reaching.
In fact, upon his retirement from “At Home with the Bible,” the
Baptist Sunday School Board stated:
“His personality and penetrating portrayal of scriptural truth sets
a standard for accurate and applicable Bible teaching on television. During
124 episodes he has helped create an audience impact that has won this
series the National Religious Broadcasters award as the nation’s
outstanding religious television program plus eight other national
awards in both the television and radio formats. Its impact in reaching
the masses
with the Gospel of Christ contributed to an unprecedented response
of more than 500,000 people being enrolled in home Bible study during
the first
five years of its existence. The Baptist Sunday School Board acknowledges
its gratitude for his role in these programs that have been seen
and heard in every state of the nation and distributed by the U.S.
Armed forces around
the world.”
Without question, Dr. Pollard was a gifted pulpiteer. But perhaps his
kindness, gentle spirit, and authentic humility are what those who knew
him will remember most. He was always an encourager, always positive, and
always saw the good in others. Let us lift the family of Dr. Pollard in
prayer and let us thank God for the work, the ministry, and the love of
Dr. Pollard.
Please note that the memorial service for Dr. Pollard will be Thursday,
December 11, at 2:00 p.m. in the main sanctuary of FBCJ. The family has
requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Mission First,
the inner-city ministry begun by FBCJ. Mission First exists in large measure
to the dedication and vision of Dr. Pollard. He had a great desire to see
the city of Jackson reached with the gospel. In keeping with his passion
for the city of Jackson and Mission First, may we honor him through these
memorial gifts.
Sincerely,
Stan Buckley, Senior Pastor
